A dog with Alopecia X has skin that has lost its coat’s protection, and looking after that skin properly is the part squarely within your control. Here’s exactly how to use the Skin Rescue Lotion, day by day — and an honest account of what it does and doesn’t change.
What to expect
With consistent application, skin comfort usually improves over the first few weeks. Coat is a separate question and a less predictable one — see the timeline below.
The single most important factor is consistency — applying the lotion every day, without skipping, throughout the course. This is a skin-rebuilding process, not a quick fix.
Step 1 — Start with a clean dog
Bathe with the organic Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar. It contains sulphur florets and neem oil, and is formulated specifically for this kind of skin trouble:
- Strong exfoliating and deep-cleansing action
- Rinses very cleanly
- Strongly anti-fungal without being harsh
- Correct pH for dogs
Bathing frequency: once at the start, again seven days later, and after that only twice per month. It’s not healthy for dogs to be bathed too often — especially during an active bout of Black Skin Disease. Over-bathing strips the skin’s protective oils and slows recovery.
Step 2 — Clip the hair, don’t shave
Trim the hair over and around the affected areas short to make lotion application easier. Do not shave.
The claim you’ll see elsewhere that shaving “introduces fungus under the skin” isn’t accurate — but avoiding it is still right. Clipping a plush coat can leave it very slow to return, a recognised entity called post-clipping alopecia, and in a predisposed dog — Pomeranians especially — clipping may unmask Alopecia X. The follicles aren’t destroyed and coat normally returns, but delayed cases can take twelve to twenty-four months.
If surgical shaving becomes necessary for any reason, look after the exposed area daily while it grows back. Skin without a coat over it has lost its protection and is vulnerable to secondary bacterial and yeast overgrowth.
Step 3 — Apply the lotion
Week 1: Apply Skin Rescue Lotion twice daily. After week 1: Apply once daily, every day.
Massage the lotion deeply into the skin until it fully absorbs. Use approximately as you’d use hand lotion — not too much, not too little. The skin should not appear greasy or wet after application. More is not better; the right amount is the amount that absorbs.
Do not skip days. The treatment only works on a continuous course.
Step 4 — Cover with a t-shirt
Keep the dog dressed in a soft t-shirt during treatment. This:
- Protects the treated skin from licking
- Shields against strong sunlight
- Keeps the lotion on the dog rather than the carpet
Nothing in Skin Rescue Lotion can harm an animal if ingested — but it only works on the skin, so keep it there.
Step 5 — Be patient
This process takes patience and persistence, and it helps to separate the two things you’re watching.
Skin usually settles over the first few weeks — less irritation, less odour, less greasiness, rust-coloured staining fading. That’s the secondary overgrowth on exposed skin clearing, and it’s what this protocol reliably does.
Coat is unpredictable. Some dogs regrow substantially, some partially, some not at all — and that holds for every Alopecia X treatment, including the hormonal drugs, which relapse frequently. Where coat returns, darkened skin fades as the hair comes back rather than flaking off.

Also useful for yeast in feet and ears
Beyond Black Skin Disease, Skin Rescue Lotion is effective against:
- Yeast in the feet — symptoms are constant paw-licking and rust-coloured staining of the hair between the toes. Apply directly twice daily.
- Yeast in the ears — apply a small amount on a fingertip and massage gently downward into the ear canal daily for a few days.
