Dermagic Skin Essentials: The Starter Kit for Dog Skin Conditions

The Dermagic Skin Essentials kit combines the Shampoo Bar, Skin Rescue Lotion and Hot Spot Salve — the three-step starter system for dogs with skin issues.

The Skin Essentials kit is the three-product starter system for any dog with a skin condition — shampoo bar, lotion, salve. Used together, they cover the full cycle from cleansing to recovery.

How to use the kit

The three products are used in sequence — clean, treat, spot-treat.

Step 1 — DERMagic Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar (Lemongrass Spearmint)

Before starting any treatment, give your dog a thorough cleansing with the organic Shampoo Bar. It’s specially formulated for deep cleansing of sensitive skin without stripping the skin’s natural defences.

Bathe every two weeks during the course of treatment. Not more often — over-bathing makes most skin conditions worse.

Step 2 — DERMagic Skin Rescue Lotion

Apply the Skin Rescue Lotion to skin that is dry, flaking, scaly, or sore from scratching. It is an emollient: it softens and lifts surface scale, conditions the skin and makes it more comfortable while the barrier recovers.

This step used to be headed “fast, effective relief from” and listed hot spots, flea allergies and dermatitis among the things it relieves. We have withdrawn that framing. Those are named conditions with veterinary diagnoses behind them, and a skincare product presented as relieving them is presenting itself as a medicine. Flea allergy dermatitis in particular is not something a lotion addresses — the dog is reacting to flea saliva, and until the fleas are gone with a product from your vet, the skin keeps being re-triggered. What the lotion genuinely does is support the recovery afterwards. The full evidence is in our guide to flea allergy dermatitis.

Massage well into the affected areas, then cover your dog with a t-shirt to keep the lotion in contact with the skin and stop them licking it off.

Reapply twice daily for the first week, then continue once daily until it’s no longer needed.

Step 3 — DERMagic Hot Spot Salve

The Hot Spot Salve is the spot-treatment for raw, irritated patches. Apply daily to affected areas until the area has cleared. It also handles:

  • Minor wounds
  • Insect bites
  • Localised allergic reactions
  • Itchy or inflamed skin

A 2 oz jar lasts a long time — keep it in the dog’s first-aid kit even after the initial flare has settled.

Who the kit is for

The Skin Essentials kit is the right starting point for a dog whose skin is dry, flaking, scaly or sore from scratching, and for keeping skin in good order once a diagnosed problem is under treatment. It’s the practical entry to the full Dermagic system, at a kit price.

What it is not is the answer to an undiagnosed itch. If your dog is scratching and you don’t know why, the cause needs identifying first — most often environmental atopy, a food reaction, or flea allergy dermatitis — because topical care cannot outrun a trigger the dog is still being exposed to.

For more advanced conditions — particularly Alopecia X or full-body Black Skin Disease — the complete Dermagic System (which adds the Cell Restoration Crème) is the better starting point.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the Dermagic Skin Essentials kit?
Three products that work as a system: the Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar, the Skin Rescue Lotion (4 oz bottle), and the Hot Spot Salve (2 oz jar). It’s the right starting point for most dogs with active skin problems.
How often should I bathe my dog during treatment?
Every two weeks. Don’t over-bathe — too frequent washing strips the skin’s natural protective oils and can make conditions worse. The Shampoo Bar deep-cleanses sensitive skin without sulphates or harsh additives.
How do I apply the Skin Rescue Lotion?
Massage well into the affected areas, then cover the dog with a t-shirt to keep the lotion on the skin. Reapply twice daily for the first week of treatment. After that, continue once daily until it’s no longer needed.
What does the Hot Spot Salve do?
It’s a concentrated, sticky version of the active ingredients formulated for raw, broken or inflamed skin. Apply daily to hot spots, minor wounds, insect bites, localised allergic reactions, and itchy or inflamed patches until the area has settled.
Is the Skin Essentials kit really all natural?
Close, and worth stating precisely rather than in slogans. The three products in this kit are the ones in the range that avoid synthetic preservatives: the shampoo bar and the salve are anhydrous so they need none at all, and the lotion is preserved with potassium sorbate and citric acid. That is not the same as the liquid shampoo and conditioner, which contain phenoxyethanol — see our preservative table for the full list. This answer used to end by calling the system ’effective enough on hot spots, dermatitis and flea-allergy reactions’; that is withdrawn, because those are diagnosed conditions and this is skincare.
